Launching a new brand into a competitive European market is never without risk. At ESSD Consulting, we’ve helped international brands navigate those challenges for years, but sometimes the biggest lessons come from situations no one could have planned for.
Our recent launch of Uinta Design at the PSI Trade Show in Düsseldorf was one of those moments.
The Plan
Our objective was straightforward.
Introduce Uinta Design—a premium American brand known for its sustainable, functional bags—to European distributors and begin building relationships across the promotional products industry.
Like every successful trade show, our strategy relied heavily on one thing:
Samples.
Visitors could see the products, touch the materials, test the quality, and experience the craftsmanship firsthand.
Then the unexpected happened.
When the Plan Fell Apart
Just before the exhibition, the Netherlands experienced what many called the biggest snowstorm of the century.
Our shipment of product samples became stranded at Schiphol Airport.
No bags.
No displays.
No backup shipment.
Just an empty stand at one of Europe’s largest industry trade fairs.
For many companies, this would have meant accepting defeat before the doors even opened.
We chose a different approach.
Adapting Instead of Giving Up
Rather than focusing on everything we didn’t have, we focused on what we still could control.
Together with Jeff Holmstead, we completely rethought our strategy overnight.
Instead of showcasing physical products, we showcased the story behind them.
We:
- Printed large product visuals overnight
- Built a digital product presentation that visitors could browse
- Turned the booth into a place for conversations instead of demonstrations
- Added a little unexpected hospitality with what may have been an excessive amount of Lindt chocolates
Was it the original plan?
Not even close.
Did it work?
Better than we expected.
The Results
Without a single physical sample on display, something interesting happened.
People stopped because the situation itself sparked curiosity.
Conversations became longer.
Visitors wanted to understand the products, the company, and the people behind the brand.
By the end of the exhibition we had:
- More than 200 new industry connections
- One of the busiest stands at the fair
- Meaningful conversations with distributors across Europe
- A successful European introduction for Uinta Design despite every logistical setback
The challenge became part of the story people remembered.
What We Learned
Trade shows are often seen as carefully orchestrated marketing events.
But in reality, business rarely follows the script.
Products get delayed.
Flights are cancelled.
Shipments disappear.
Markets change.
The companies that succeed aren’t necessarily the ones with the perfect plan—they’re the ones that adapt the fastest.
At ESSD Consulting, we believe resilience is one of the most valuable business skills any company can develop.
When something goes wrong, you always have two choices:
You can focus on what you’ve lost.
Or you can focus on what you can still create.
A Mindset That Makes the Difference
One philosophy has consistently helped guide our team through unexpected situations:
- Don’t take setbacks personally.
- Don’t make assumptions.
- Always do your best with the situation in front of you.
- Never give up.
Sometimes your greatest competitive advantage isn’t having everything go according to plan.
It’s how you respond when nothing does.
Because when handled the right way, today’s obstacle often becomes tomorrow’s success story.
